UK governments of every colour have supported policies to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles as their societal and environmental benefits are clear.

Following the publication of the Road to Zero Strategy and the ongoing consultation on ending the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars and vans, the government has set itself the most ambitious environmental and EV targets yet. This is especially true of their commitment to reach net-zero by 2050. Electric vehicles and the widespread usability and affordability of their charging infrastructure are essential to achieving these targets.

WA’s transport and infrastructure team have taken a deep dive into what the UK’s international counterparts have been doing to increase EV uptake and have examined some of their key success factors as we perceive them, including:

  1. Adopt an ambitious strategy;
  2. Empowering local and regional government;
  3. Ensuring a health balance between public-private investment; and
  4. Work collaboratively to ensure a positive consumer experience.

From this, we’ve also drawn out some of the key practical challenges facing the UK if it’s to fully realise its environmental and EV ambitions.
